Sports Chaplaincy Australia, together with John’s wife Jennifer, invite you to join with us in contributing to the vision of seeing chaplains serve in every sports community in Australia.
John Van Groningen invested over twenty years as a chaplain with both the Australian and NBL basketball teams, the Western Bulldogs (AFL) and in recent time among indigenous, pacific island and Asian communities through his ministry Red Dust Role Models.
In December 2012 John was suddenly taken from us.

John served under coach (Jim) Calvin – a colourful Texan and would often be seen praying with the players in a circle prior to the game. During the NBL at that time many of the American imports were familiar with the role of Chaplains which made his role smoother. Here, (left) John is seen with Ray Owes (tall guy) and Orlando Williams.
Later, John became Chaplain at Melbourne Magic. When they played cross-town rivals Melbourne Tigers John would often be seen with his younger brother Jeff (right) at Rod Laver Arena (here in 1999). Jeff was Managing Director of the Tigers.
