John Van Groningen Scholarship Program

In 1994, John Van Groningen, a local youth leader in Geelong was asked by Rev Mark Tronson to help out the Geelong Supercats as their team chaplain.

John served under coach (Jim) Calvin – a colourful Texan and would often be seen praying with the players in a circle prior to the game. During the NBL at that time many of the American imports were familiar with the role of Chaplains which made his role smoother. Here, (left) John is seen with Ray Owes (tall guy) and Orlando Williams.

Later, John became Chaplain at Melbourne Magic. When they played cross-town rivals Melbourne Tigers John would often be seen with his younger brother Jeff (right) at Rod Laver Arena (here in 1999). Jeff was Managing Director of the Tigers.

John served under coach Brian Goorjian who has remained a strong supporter of the role of chaplaincy in his teams ever since.

John was an outstanding community leader and much admired husband to Jennifer, father, chaplain and friend to all he met. His standout qualities were grace, kindness, generousity, encouragement, authenticity, servant leadership, service, strength of character and teammanship. He had an entrepreneurial spirit which led to the formation of ArmTOUR and later Red Dust Role Models empowering high-profile Athletes and others to make a difference in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

John left an amazing legacy, we, in SCA would hope for all our chaplains in their own unique way.
