New Groundbreaking Nation-Wide Care Program for Australian Sports by Sports Chaplaincy Australia
SCA is now providing an Australia-wide CRITICAL INCIDENT support service for sports leagues & associations to care for their members during tough times. If a club has a critical incident, traumatic loss, suicide, severe injury or difficult moment – a crisis care chaplain will serve the club when required. Our chaplains are first-responders who provide critical incident pastoral care and assist with professional referral for members if and when needed. The program provides peace-of-mind to clubs Presidents and Committees who often carry the burden alone.
Critical Incident Sport Within moments of Peter’s fatal car crash at the Targa West Rally Chaplain Kim van Keule was contacted by the Clerk of the Course in Rally Control asking him to comfort his partner Julie. Six chaplains across 3 States supported the family and racing community for over 6 months.
National Championships Matthew was a 15 year-old boy who lost his life on the Gold Coast when he drowned after an accident. Family, rescuers, participants, competitors, Club members and the SLSA community were cared for by four of our team. Some for many months beyond the tragedy. Others, to this day.
Home Tragedy The very public death of Adelaide Crows Coach impacted us all in Australia. At 4.30am Crows Chaplain Mark Purser was contacted by the President to help. Mark greeted players as they arrived early in the morning, many in tears. His care for the club and family continues.
On-field Spinal Injury The young Albury footballer was medi-vacced to Melbourne after a severe on-field injury witnessed by many. Three chaplains supported the incident including the local team, the opposition team, family and the player 300 km away in hospital in Melbourne.
“Unfortunately, these incidents happen far too often in our clubs.”
