Paul Burnham on the kingdom outcome of consistently representing Jesus.
“In 1994 an absolute legend of the Club, a Brownlow Medallist, wrote to me with these words,
“The night I came to your church was one that will definitely leave a great impression on me. During that evening I saw a person who was dedicated to what he was doing, his family, and to everyone who wants to get a piece of you. You give so many people a gift of life, an opportunity to see it for what it is, a chance to live life to its fullest. A chance never to regret and most of all a chance to love.
At first when you arrived at the football club I was unsure of your ability and questioned your credibility, but slowly I heard stories from my team mates who had confided in you and you had been with them in their darkest hours and crises; however big or small.
I have many role models in my life who inspire me. You are another one of those special people whom I can openly add to a part of my life. You are a great man an inspirational human being who is making a huge difference in our society. The measure of a great man is how he treats a lesser. Thank you for your support over the years.”
And then in 2012, this same legend of the club was dying of cancer. He called me into his inner circle and every day for 3 months I ministered to my friend of many years. Four days before his passing, whilst he and I were spending precious moments together, I asked him the question: “Do you believe with all your heart that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God?”
To which he answered, “Yes Rev, I do!”
A few hours later my friend slipped into coma and passed away 4 days later. I was privileged to do my friend’s cremation service at Springvale which was so personal and moving. I know I will see my friend in Heaven one day, and instead of kicking a Sherrin around he will be worshipping at the feet of Jesus. And that my dear friends is what makes chaplaincy so wonderful and precious. Being in the right place at the right time at the invitation and call of Jesus our Saviour and Lord.
