Unlocking the Power of Chaplaincy and Wellbeing with a VIP Tour Inside the Penrith Panthers Facility

03 October 2023

Sports Chaplaincy Australia recently took a group of supporters on a VIP tour of the legendary, multi-NRL Grand Final winning Penrith Panthers club rooms and training facilities. Led by the Panthers’ Well-being Team, this exclusive tour not only provided a behind-the-scenes look into the club at work but also shed light on the vital role of chaplains in professional sports.

Meeting Panther’s Chaplain, David Simmons

David Simmons, a former Pather’s player – turned chaplain, shared his insights and experiences with the group. He not only serves as a spiritual guide but also stands as an unwavering source of inspiration and support for the players through the sometimes turbulent life of a professional athlete.

The vital role chaplains play in athletes’ lives should not be understated. They provide emotional support, a listening ear, and a sense of community, as well as help players navigate the challenges and pressures of juggling their careers and ‘normal’ life.

Our visit to the Penrith Panthers Training Academy left an indelible mark on our understanding of athlete well-being; and reiterated the importance of providing support to clubs. Chaplains like David Simmons are indispensable to this holistic approach, offering not just guidance but a profound sense of belonging to the players.

A heartfelt shout-out goes to our dream team – David, Kevin, Joe, and Paolo – who made the evening both enjoyable and inspiring.

In David’s own words, “Our well-being team here at the Panthers serves as a vital gateway for these elite athletes, aiding them in flourishing across all facets of their lives. But this is for just a hundred or so players! What we truly require is chaplains out there in the local community sports. That’s where the people are, and that’s where we can make a monumental impact.”
